How to charge NMC / NCA battery: daily to 80 %, to 100 % just before the trip

Part of the Guide Electro-mobile batteriesAre you choosing a car? The battery chemistry of specific models can be found in catalogue of electric cars.

NMC and NCA batteries (most Long Range versions, premium cars) offer the best range - in exchange for one rule: do not like the high state of charge in which the car standsThe higher and warmer the warmer the faster the calendar article gets older.

Why 80 %?

The calendar aging of Li-ion cells grows with tension. Above ~ 4,1 V per article (roughly above 80-85 % charge) in electrolyte and on anode starting parasitic reactions that irreversibly nibble up capacity. It is not a jump - but a car that Every night stands at 100 %, collects damage week after week. Just as harmful is long standing under ~ 10 %.

Practical rules for NMC

1. Daily charge limit set to 70–80 %. 2. 100 % just before the long route - and ideally so that the charging ends just before departure, not in advance at night. 3. Do not park for weeks with full or empty battery; for longer standing the ideal is 40-60 %. 4. In summer park in the shade / garage - heat is the worst combination with high SOC. 5. You don't have to worry about DC charging fast (why), but above 80 % it slows equally significantly - on the route it is faster to charge 10 → 70 % twice than 10 → 100 % once.

How much does that actually cost?

The fleet comparison (Recurrent 2025, data from thousands of Tesels) shows that vehicles regularly charged to 100 % have a percentage of capacity after years of units below the limit of 70-80 %. It is not a disaster - but it is unnecessary to donate 5- 8 % to a car because of bad habits.

⚡ Try it in practice

Plan your route with your (or dream) car - planner counts on the charging curve, recommends where to go for food and shows the indicative cost of the charge.
