NMC vs. LFP: which battery to choose when buying an electric car

Part of the Guide Electro-mobile batteriesAre you choosing a car? The battery chemistry of specific models can be found in catalogue of electric cars.

The same model car is often sold today two completely different batteries - and the seller won't tell you on his own. LFP (lithium-iron phosphate), more expensive version with longer range NMC or NCA (nickel-manganese-cobalt / nickel-cobalt-aluminium). Difference is not only in the range: it differs by: How to take care of the battery, how to age and how to behave in winter.

Rapid comparison

PropertyLFPNMC / NCA
Charging at 100 %✅ cool, manufacturers recommend it (calibration)⚠️ for daily inconvenient mode - full battery parking accelerates aging
Cyclic lifetypically higher (often 3000 + cycles)typically 1000-2000 cycles
Energy density / rangelower → shorter range at the same sizeHigher → long range
Wintermore sensitive to frost (power and charge without preheating)better behaviour at low temperatures
Estimate% in carBMS worse estimates status → occasional calibration required at 100 %more accurate SOC estimation
Price / Ethics of raw materialscheaper, without cobaltmore expensive, contains cobalt and nickel

Geotab in the study of January 2026 lists the average annual degradation of 2,3 %; in analysis 2024 it was 1,8 %. It is neither a median nor a guarantee of the lifetime of a single car. Conditions of use vary; for a particular car the measurement of SoH and the manufacturer's instructions decide. Primary source, 2026.

Who's there for

LFP select when: you drive mainly the city and the districts, you charge at home or at work, you want a car "without rules" and you don't mind a little shorter range in winter. Typically: Tesla Model 3 / Y Standard, BYD (all), MG basic version, Citroën ë-C3, Fiat Grande Panda.

Select NMC / NCA if: You regularly drive the highway and long routes, you need maximum range and fast charging in winter - and you are willing to abide by one rule: daily charge to ~ 80 %, on 100 % just before long trip.
